Therapy is a pride practice

Each June, Pride Month invites us to celebrate LGBTQIA+ identities, honor the trailblazers who’ve fought for visibility and rights, and reflect on the journey toward authentic self-expression. While Pride is a time of joy and connection, it can also bring up complex emotions—especially for those navigating mental health challenges, identity struggles, or family rejection.

At Draw Within Counseling, I believe in the power of creativity as a tool for healing. Expressive art therapy offers a space where LGBTQIA+ individuals of all ages can explore their identities, process emotions, and build self-compassion in ways that words alone often can’t.

Why Pride Month Can Be Emotionally Complex

For many queer and trans folx, Pride is not just a celebration—it’s also a reminder of past wounds and ongoing struggles. Common themes that may surface this month include:

  • Navigating coming out or being “out enough”

  • Feeling pressure to appear joyful even while struggling

  • Grieving family disconnection or religious trauma

  • Facing systemic discrimination or internalized shame

These experiences can intensify anxiety, depression, and trauma responses. That’s where expressive art therapy steps in as a powerful, nonverbal outlet.

What Is Expressive Art Therapy?

Expressive art therapy integrates visual art, movement, music, writing, and other creative modalities into the therapeutic process. It’s not about making "good" art—it’s about creating something that helps you process and express what’s inside.

In my work with LGBTQIA+ clients, expressive art therapy often becomes a way to:

  • Visualize identity through symbols, colors, and metaphors

  • Reclaim body autonomy and appreciation through collage or movement

  • Externalize inner critics and build affirming internal allies

  • Tell stories of resilience and chosen family

  • Explore hope, future dreams, and sources of pride

Pride Month Expressive Art Prompts to Try

Whether you’re working with a therapist or reflecting at home, here are a few expressive art therapy ideas to honor your journey this Pride:

🎨 “Draw Your Flag” – Create your own identity flag using colors, shapes, or imagery that reflect who you are and what you value.

📝 “Letters of Pride” – Write a letter to your younger self or future self. What do you want them to know about your growth and strength?

🎭 “Mask & Mirror” – Create a mask representing how the world sees you. Then, make one showing your authentic self.

🧱 “Strength Shield” – Design a visual shield with symbols that represent your sources of resilience—like community, joy, creativity, or hope.

🌈 “Collage Your Queerness” – Cut and paste magazine images, words, and textures that celebrate your identity and experience.

Pride Is Personal—And You Deserve Support

Pride isn’t one-size-fits-all. It’s okay if your celebration looks quiet, uncertain, messy, or reflective. Expressive art therapy can meet you exactly where you are and help you move toward greater self-acceptance and empowerment.

At Draw Within Counseling, I specialize in LGBTQIA+ mental health, expressive arts, and creating a space where you can feel seen and supported. Whether you're exploring identity, managing anxiety, or healing from past wounds, your story matters—and I’m here to help you express it.
